Grant Fox to select Rugby World Cup 2011 flag bearers
Grant Fox, the former All Blacks fly-half and the current television host, will be making selections for flag bearers of each participating nation in the 2011 Rugby World Cup. The selection of flag bearers by Fox will be on behalf of Emirates, the RWC 2011Worldwide
Partner
The selected participants will be required to carry the flag of the participating teams ahead of each match onto the Rugby World Cup 2011 field. There are 91 flag bearers needed who must fall within the age of 14 and 16. The call for young flag bearers has
been extended to all of New Zealand.
The selection criterion is very simple. An application has been placed on the official website of the Emirates, in which the candidates are expected to express in 50 words or less why they are the best choice for flag bearer. If the applicant’s explanation
makes an impact on the selection committee, the lucky contender will win a spot amongst the flag bearers. The selected flag bearer will also receive two free tickets for their parents so that they may enjoy the RWC 2011 experience together.
Comparing his own personal experience of the Rugby world Cup, Fox also mentioned that the flag bearers will get to experience the excitement of the World Cup crowd with their parents witnessing the special moment.
While talking about the opportunity, Fox stated, “As a player, I very well remember what a buzz it was running out on to the various grounds we played on in 1987 and I can only imagine what an experience it will be for these young people to go out in front
of the teams, flying a national flag.”
Fox is known for his goal kicking abilities while he played for New Zealand. In 1985, he made his Test debut against Argentina in Buenos Aires in a win of 33-20. Fox had the ability to out- perform, which was obvious through his accelerated rate of completing
100 Test points scored within six games.
Also, Fox was part of the World Cup winning squad in 1987 when he managed to bag the top scorer title.
Fox considers himself fortunate for being part of the selection team, as there is a high possibility that he is picking a rugby player of the future.
While speaking about his role, Fox stated, "The big plus is that this year, for the first time in nearly a quarter of a century, the fields are here in New Zealand. It may be some time before we have this opportunity to have Rugby World Cup flagbearers on
our home grounds again, with so many other nations emerging as potential tournament hosts."
