Grant Turner aims to qualify for the 2012 London Olympic Games – Swimming News
Britain’s freestyle swimmer, Grant Turner, has revealed that he aims to qualify for the 4*100m freestyle relay team for the upcoming 2012 London Olympic Games.
The 22-year-old Turner, who has never reached the Olympic or World Championships stage in his life, spoke to the media about his London qualification dream on May 26, 2011.
Turner earned the silver medal in the 100m freestyle at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, while he finished ninth in the 50m event and the 100m freestyle.
He expressed that the 4*100m freestyle has always been a week event of the British Swimming team. Turner shared that his London qualifications dream after attending a British training camp.
While articulating his desire for a podium finish at London, Turner said, “It is getting better now with a few young guys coming through and we can take on the rest of the world. If Adam and I can bring our times down and help the rest of the team I can’t
see why we can’t pick up a medal in London.”
Turner failed to qualify for the last two World Championships, whereas, his fellow swimmers demonstrated beautiful swims to achieve podium finish in their respective events.
Nevertheless, the 22-year-old aims to qualify for the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, by dominating his events at the second British national trials, next month. He won the silver medal in the 100m freestyle at the 2011 British National Championships,
but he needs to sustain his spot at the upcoming second trials, to qualify for the 2011 World Championships.
Turner added, “Two years ago I went to the worlds for the relay team but didn’t swim and that was a pretty tough time for me individually. I went there but I didn’t really feel part of the team because I was just in the stands watching and cheering on.”
Turner faces severe competition with his fellow swimmers, Adam Brown and Ross Davenport, but he claims that he will reach the Shanghai starting blocks and will meet the expectations of his fans by earning a podium finish.
