Grant Turner and Xavier Mohammed win Men’s qualifying rounds: British Gas ASA National Championships
Grant Turner and Xavier Mohammed demonstrated breath-taking skills in the qualifying rounds of Men’s events on the final day of the 2011 British Gas ASA National Championships.
The session included events of the Men’s 100m freestyle, 200m Individual Medley (IM), 200m breast-stroke and the 1500m freestyle in the open class category.
In the Men’s 100m freestyle heats, Grant Turner of Loughborough University qualified as the fastest swimmer in the final rounds, where he completed his swim in a time of 49.30 seconds. He was followed by Millfield’s James Disney-May,
who followed him on the finishing wall as the second fastest sprinter, by posting a time of 50.16 seconds. Robert Renwick of Glasgow failed to overwhelm Disney-May’s effort by only 0.03 seconds and entered the finals as the third fastest swimmer, by posting
a time of 50.19 seconds.
Windsor’s Simon Burnett was the fourth fastest swimmer to proceed in the finals, as he touched the wall in a time of 50.28 seconds. Jak Scott of Stirling Swim completed his swim in the fifth fastest place and posted a time of 50.62
seconds.
Moments later, the spectators witnessed the amazing efforts of Cardiff’s Xavier Mohammed, who dominated the preliminary rounds of the 200m IM. Mohammed was the first athlete to finish his swim, as he clocked in a time of 2:03.88
minutes. He was followed by Loughborough University’s Adam Harrington and Luke Wood, who concluded their swims in the second and third fastest spots, by submitting an effort of 2:03.93 and 2:04.75 minutes, respectively.
Lewis Smith of Warrender Ba and Thomas Greenfield of Brentwood finished their swims in the fourth and fifth place, by reporting on the finishing wall with timings of 2:04.95 and 2:05.02 minutes, respectively.
Edinburgh University’s Kristopher Gilchrist posted a time of 2:15.21 minutes to secure the top qualification spot in the final rounds of the 200m breast-stroke. He was followed by Christopher Steeples of Derventio and Russell Smith
of Stockport, who qualified as the second and third fastest swimmers, by touching the wall in a time of 2:16.44 and 2:17.11 minutes, respectively. Loughborough University’s James Broady stayed almost 0.16 seconds away from claiming the third fastest spot and
touched the wall in 2:17.27 minutes.
The final event of the session was the 1500m freestyle heats, where Sheffield’s Daniel Cocking was the first swimmer to complete his 30 lap swim. He touched the wall in a fastest time of 16:06.22 minutes ahead of Lawrence Lowman
and Benjamin Flaherty, who were the second and third fastest swimmers in a time of 16:13.75 and 16:24.36 minutes, respectively.
