Grants Farm Manor defeat Long Beach-Palm Desert, 8-6, to lift the Lisle Nixon Memorial Cup: Polo News
Santiago Wulff scored seven goals and had an assist, as Grants Farm Manor powered a commanding two-goal, 8-6, victory over the Long Beach-Palm Desert to capture the 12-goal Lisle Nixon Memorial Cup. The cliff-hanging game was held at the Santa Barbara Polo
Club in California.
Grants Farm scored eight goals against the six of their contenders to lift the first ever title of the Lisle Nixon Memorial tournament. The Grants Farm had some powerful blows in the opening period, rolled up some points from Santiago Wulff in the second
and third chukkas, and regained the lead in the final set of play to conclude the long trip with a triumph.
Contrary to expectations, it was quite a low-scoring match and both teams played defensive style of polo.
The first half of play was completely belonged to Grants Farm Manor, as their resilient defence kept Long Beach off the score-board in the opening three sets of play. Many of their shots and hits were missed or blocked by the opposite side.
Santiago opened the scoring through a penalty conversion in the first chukka and put Grants Farm ahead on the score-board. However, it was the only offence from the two sides and period was ended with Grants Farm sitting on top by a single goal. Though the
strikers from Long Beach carried out numerous efforts, these were denied from the opposite side.
The next two frames were also dominated by Wulff, who notched another three goals from the penalty conversions and expanded the lead up to four goals, 4-0. The strikers from Long Beach failed to bring their best into the score net in the first half and trailed
by four goals at the half-time.
The Long Beach attack came alive in the fourth set of play, but it could only score a single goal in the period. Luis Escobar in reply of the fifth goal from Wulff scored first goal for Long Beach to bring it into the score net. The period ended with Grants
Farm holding a four goals edge, 5-1.
However, h**l broke out when Escobar scored another five goals in the second last period and tied the knots at 6-6. The defensemen from Long Beach could not allow Grants Farm's strikers to make an addition into the score.
But, the final chukka was again dominated by Grants Farm which obtained another two goals while holding Long Beach goal-less. Wulff and his team-mate Artie Cameron scored one goal apiece and sealed the Grants Farm victory at 8-6.
