  1. This is a powerfully written book that uses words to paint vivid scenes and events.  You find yourself caught up in its pages and its characters.

John Steinbeck might have exaggerated the problem in the 1930s, but for some who experienced the Great Depression, what he described was no exaggeration.  His novel has historical significance, and some are still alive today who remember those times.  So many of the destitute came to California and settled in areas of towns that were referred to as Okieville or some other name.  As in the town near where I live, those areas disappeared over the years, and the once destitute are now affluent.  But the Great Depression left its mark on many, including my parents, who worked hard to secure a safe future for us kids.

Also it is significant because it contains lessons for us today.  What happened here in the 1930s still happens for various reasons in other countries.   We have a greater understanding of what these people suffer and what can be done to help them.
