I want to go to uni to do graphic design. I'm 21. I'm nervous that I'll be surrounded by 18 year olds and I'll be one of the oldest there or something.

What was your own class like? average ages?

  1. I went back to Art school when i was 26, and the mix of ages of students was similar throughout all the fine arts and design courses. There were 18 year olds of course, with the oldest person being in their late fifties and all the ages in between. I didn't feel out of place at all, and i doubt that at 21 you will be anything like the oldest there, though of course schools vary.

If you are worried maybe contact the school beforehand, ours has forums on their website where you can virtually get together with people before you even start, there may be mature students groups you can go along to at the start of the term to meet others (where you would be the youngest and not the oldest!), but i'm sure once you are there you will just meet people of all ages and walks of life.

And as a last thought, i found it is not always the youngest people that are the least mature, some of my friends were a good few years younger, some much older - it really is just about people . :-)

  2. I very much doubt you'll be the oldest there, i started my Graphics degree after a foundation art course and was 19 although there were a few 18 year olds, most were my age, there were also many 20/21 year olds and a few 23 or so year olds. So i wouldn't worry! Hope this helps!! :)
