I have a neighbour who has over the years dumped his grass cuttings in a pile in the corner of his garden. This has reached a height of approx 5 foot and approx 6 foot across. I have a concern that could become a hazard,as this is about 10 - 12 foot from our kitchen door area.I would like to know what risks could arise if this large mound of grass cuttings are allowed to continue.Any advice on how to dispose of this if it does become a problem?

  1. I've been advised to keep lawn clippings away from fences and such because the grass releases energy in the form of heat as it degrades and can damage the wood. As far as I know, it's okay to keep the clippings for mulch and composting though as long as there isn't anything close to it.

  2. Well rotted grass will be welcomed by any keen gardner

  3. Ask him if you can have some of the beautiful mulch for your garden. When he sees what it is doing to your garden and the beautiful flowers and vegetables that you are growing - you will probably find that he will do the same - pity about that - a ready made source of fertiliser and mulch - perfect for your garden - but hey! can't have it both ways but at least you won't have concerns about it being a hazard any more

    Happy gardening and healthy eating

  4. It's a compost pile or could easily become one if it were turned occasionally. If done right it is the best fertilizer there is. If it bothers you and he's not using it ask if you could have it or buy it.  RScott

  5. Ask him if you can cover it with Black polythene if so soak it before hand and throw some Garrota (about£2) over it.

The compost you'll get from it within 3 months is the best you can use for your garden plants

  6. Report him to the local Council - why should you put up with it?

  7. Are you sure it's not just grass clippings but rather an entire compost pile?  Grass clippings alone mat down and eventually fade away, bringing nutrients back to the soil.

There is no risk to you per se.  A good compost pile isn't flamable unless it dries out (but then there wouldn't be any decomposition!).

I'm just curious why your neighbor doesn't use that pile more efficiently.  Letting the grass just pile up over the years is such a waster.  Like someone else already said, grass clippings are gold to a keen gardener!

Have you spoken to your neighbor about this pile?  Maybe there is something more to this than you think.

  8. as soon as leaves fall he'll have the makings of a fine compost pile... and it will be EVEN BIGGER!!!.... nothing's going to come out of that grass pile and 'gitcha' or bother you...... why do YOU need advice on 'how to dispose of this'???... ain't YOUR problem, now, is it?..... it's in HIS yard!.......keep yer nose  in your own yard....
