Question:

Grass Versus Hay. Is there a big difference?

I have one 4 month old female guinea pig. It is expensive to get oxbow hay, and a 15 oz. pack is mowed through in one week. I have a huge backyard with lots and lots of green bermuda. Is it alright to replace Timothy Hay with fresh cut grass? She prefers it to Timothy. it's handcut from the lawn(no pesticides, fertilizer, herbicides of any sort) daily. If you can feed dried Grass Hay to pigs, why not feed them fresh, green bermuda? Nutritional Facts are below in the links. Can you provide your opinion?

  1. Grass is moist and hay is dry grass.

  2. i get grass from outside its fine its what they eat in the wild so

  3. If you have proof from a vet or vet based site then go for it.

  4. Bermuda grass is too high in calcium to be the staple grass in your piggie's diet. She may end up with bladder stones and/bladder sludge after a period of time.

I have a large herd of piggies, so I go through a very large amount of hay. You can keep the cost of your hay down by purchasing in bulk. If you purchase a 50lb box of hay, it is much less that purchasing hay retail, even with the shipping. And you're feeding your piggie the best diet to keep her healthy. KMS Hayloft has the best hay I've ever seen. I have ordered from Oxbow for what seems like forever, but will not go back after seeing the difference in quality between the two hays.

  5. I used to give my guinea pigs grass from my lawn, and i don't think fresh would be any different than dry, probably even better! And if they like it, go for it!
