The blue Plexicushion surface employed at the 2010 Australian Open is a recent installation at the January Grand Slam. In fact, that surface first appeared at the 2008 tournament, after the tournament had been played on Rebound Ace for the previous 20 years. But from its inception in 1905 until 1987, the Australian Open was played on grass.
