Grasshopper like insect?

I just killed some grasshopper like insect in my living room...it was the creepiest thing I have ever seen...it was about an inch and a half in length and a grayish color and had a brown stinger on it's rear end. It also had long antennae...anyone know what that could have been?? I live in Upstate NY if that helps.

  1. Another possibility is a Mole Cricket. They look a bit like grasshoppers. They are usually more brown than grey though, but it may be what you saw.

    Here's a pic., anyway.

  3. That long stinger is called the ovipositor.  Grasshoppers and Locusts both have one, and it allows them to lay eggs in the soil.  What you probably saw was a female grasshopper or locust with her ovipositor exposed, after all this is getting into the egg laying season for them.
