Grassing over ashphalt?

Is it possible to do?

Say if I get about a 6 inch layer of top soil and then sod..what's the success rate of the grass actually taking?

I've recently moved to a corner lot with a very tiny yard (10 ft wide x 20 ft long) but the side driveway is double that size and I'm looking for a quick fix.

  1. Grass will grow on soil asphalt if an even moisture can be maintained. Gras usually only requires about 4 inches of soil .

  2. Sure, if you get say some brick, and make like a brick border (only 1 layer of brick for grass) so that the soil can be contained, so when you water, the soil doesn't wash away and take the seed with it.  If you make your border over the asphalt, then place your soil, then seed, then I personally would recommend getting some straw or plastic cover from a garden center) to cover the seeds until they take root, so the birds don't eat the seeds.  Good luck!  :)

  3. If it's that small an area (200 sq. ft) get one of your male friends to come over there and break it up.  (i'm sure you come up with something to show him your gratitude- dinner, beers, etc :)

Even if there happens to be baserock under the oil-based asphalt, it'll be such a better drainage situation for your grass.  I'm just afraid your grass roots won't be too happy when they reach that oil-based pavement.

  4. the grass would grow but you wouldn't be able to grow anything els on it
