Question:

Gratuity - How much to tip?

Tipping is big in our house because my hubbys grandma was a waitress and she always made him promise to tip well.

I usually go by 15%. So in my head its $1.50 for every $10.

Tonight we ordered pizza it was $28 - I gave the driver a $5 tip, but then I started thinking that’s too much.

I'm kind of lost - Do you tip everyone equally? A waitress the same as a pizza guy?

What are the rules!?

  1. I have seen that tipping differs hugely from country to country, and I think one should determione what the practice in a specific area is before you tip.

Here in South Africa, I tip between 10 - 15%, with a simple rule that I will never tip less that ZAR 10. (Many waiters in Sa do not receive ANY basic pay from the place where they work and have to survisie on the tips.)

Many of my friends worked as waiters/waitresses (AGES ago) and they told me the people with small bills usually tip well. What is a real problem is the meals for large groups. It does seem that these people think that a 10% tip is excessive (since the bill is so big). What they do not realise is that the person serving one table of 10 people, cannot serve any other tables. If you therefor decide NOT to give a decent tip, your poor waiter ends up with no money for the meal.

  2. I think the standard now is 20%. It used to be 15%.

I don't always tip equally. If I get really good service I will tip 30%. It just depends, but nothing less than 10% for really bad service.

  3. i tip according to the service... pizza dude usually gets 5-9, waitress if she's good (or waiter, if its a he) depends on the bill, typically on 50 i'll tip 10-20, less than 50 will usually just do 10... over fifty doesnt happen often, so i will usually round out the total... like if the bill is 78.25 i'd tip 21.75 to make the bank balancing easier.  i dont think the servers calculate percentages. ( i didnt when i was a waitress.)  i've always wondered if i was a good tipper.. i hope so. i'd hate to think ive been jipping people all this time....

  4. to insure  promptness  5 dollars  will  do the  trick.

    he will remember  you

    money  well  spent

15-20%  is  fine depending  on  how  it  rounds  up

  5. if I'm at a nice fancy restaurant i tip 10 dollars if the jobs done right.

the local diner i always tip 5 dollars.

i let the pizza guy keep the change if its under 10 bucks

  6. Too little - delivery is an extra service

    $10 for your pie

Round of Drinks $5 would be fine

    Dinner $6

If your food is bad and a dinner is taken off the bill add it back in to figure the tip

But technically you don't have to tip on the tax so take that out.

  7. lt's usually 10-15% nowadays. Some are giving 20 which is better for the recepient.

l don't eat out often and delivery in our place is already a fixed price (delivery service included). lt's only when l visit the salon or pay the barber for my sons' haircuts that l give a 10-20% tip.

  8. I know a few waiters, and I don't eat out very often, so I always tip at least 20%.  Always tip something, but feel free to vary based on the quality of service.

  9. 15%-20%!!!!

I am a server!!! Even if the service is bad you never know what all they might have going on at the moment they might have 8 other tables at that same time plus already work a shift before and is having a lousy night.

However if they really suck and they don't seem busy then maybe only leave them 10%
