Gravel question for fish tank ??

I recently bought an Eclipse System 6 Tank and 2 bags of 5 pound gravel. I cleaned all around the tank with a damp paper towel. I just added 5 pounds of gravel, should I add more?

Wow, 3 inches? That takes away some of the swimming space for your fish if keeping it that deep. If you want to have a tank full of live plants, that is the only time I would recommend going that deep with the gravel. In most cases 1.5-2" is plenty deep for the substrate.

Edit: Keep in mind that with just 1/4" of gravel, it won't be holding down any fake plants and stuff very well. Sand traps gases, but usually gravel doesn't if you vacuum it really well, since the gravel has spaces in between to allow gases to escape. Sand does not and is compacted down, which means with that you have to stir it with your fingers with water changes to release those gases.

I've done extensive research on this issue.

Basically, it depends on what you wanna do with your tank.

If it's a planted tank, have it at 4" high.

If it's for fish only, have it at most 0.25".  <-Yes, that's very low.

The ONLY purpose of gravel for a fish-only tank is to block the reflection from the bottom glass.

Disadvantage of high gravels:

- Lose water volume

- Lose swimming area

- Waste build up. <-- most serious. When gravel is high, oxygen and water flow can't reach inside. The waste that has been locked up in it creates poison. When they are being released all at once... very bad very bad. Gravels are actually silent killers.

Whenever you see a fish tank with 2-3"+ of gravel, you know they are not expert with tanks. And it's a common mistake. BIG mistake.

What I did with my tank...

it has fishes.. so i keep it at 0.25", and i find that very clean and spacious. But I do have plants.. lots of them. Wherever that there are plants, the gravel layer will be slightly higher (1"+) to hold the plants.

I have an Eclipse System 6 tank (plus many other tanks.) Add gravel so that it covers the bottom of the tank evenly and the layer of gravel is 3 inches thick.
