Gray Maynard: I want to make a strong statement by knocking out Clay Guida – UFC News
Gray Maynard, the former number one UFC lightweight title contender, is aggressive and in dire need of grabbing a win. In his recent interview, Gray remarked that he does not want to simply win over Clay Guida, his Friday night opponent, in fact he wants
to knock out Guida in order to make a strong statement.
Gray is scheduled to take on Clay in a non-title bout on Ultimate Fighting Championship’s pay-per-view ‘UFC on FX 4’. The duo will headline the fight card and the octagon for the event will be set up at Revel Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, United States.
The show will be televised live on FX channel on June 22, 2012 and will also witness Sam Stout take on Spencer Fisher in a non-title bout while constituting the co-main event. Maynard recently shared his view point on various matters during a detailed interview.
Gray, 32, is a top-notch UFC lightweight brawler who has collected wins over many respectable names. Maynard caught media’s attention during his epic feud with Frankie Edgar.
The Nevada hailing belligerent has been in a total of 13 mixed martial art bouts. Maynard has collected just two of his total 10 wins by knockout and has not grabbed even a single submission win.
During the interview, Gray shared his bitterness about how he feels to lose the title bout twice. Maynard stated, “I hate to lose and of course it kills me. I moved, I left my gym, I changed my whole life because of it. It hasn't been easy. It's been a hard
time in my life.”
Gray was of the view that he has knocked five former champions despite that he was unable to nail the man against whom he had already collected a win once. It must be reminded that Gray was the one who gifted Edgar, the former UFC lightweight champion, his
career’s very first defeat.
Maynard further stated that he wants to make a statement on Friday night and commented, “Winning on Friday against Guida isn't good enough. I know I've got to knock him out, make a statement, to make my case for a title shot. I know it's not likely I get
another fight with Frankie so soon, but if Ben keeps the belt, I think I make sense as No. 1 contender.”
Clay, Gray’s opponent, is a highly experienced brawler who has been in a total of 41 mixed martial art bouts. Guida is a submission specialist who has collected 15 of his total 29 wins by making the opponent submit.
