Gray Maynard collects split decision win over Clay Guida at UFC on FX 4 – UFC News
Gray Maynard, the fastest knockout pounder in UFC, collected a split decision win against Clay Guida, the former Strikeforce lightweight champion, in a five-round bout held at UFC on FX4 on June 22, 2012.
The bout which was anticipated to be a highly explosive one thrashed the spectators and UFC fanatics’ feelings and collected mush boo’s. The duo headlined the pay-per-view which consisted of two fight cards – one main card which was televised live on FX
channel and the other one preliminary card televised live on Fuel TV.
The octagon for the extravaganza was set up at Revel Atlantic City situated in Atlantic City, New Jersey, United States. The night was co-headlined by another lightweight non-title bout between Sam Stout and Spencer Fisher.
Gray, 33, was entering his career’s 14th bout. Even though he was seriously overshadowed by Clay’s experience, he did not show any kind of intimidation rather got somewhat irritated at the sluggish game plan followed by Guida.
From the very beginning of the bout, Gray strived extremely hard to get close to Guida who kept on skipping in and out of Maynard’s range. As soon as Gray moved in to connect a jab or kick Clay sprinted out of his range.
The only action that the first two rounds witnessed was the cut that Clay engraved on Gray’s nose by connecting a stinging jab. The incident occurred in the inaugural seconds when the duo was exchanging jabs.
Since then till the end of the two rounds, it was a cat and mouse chase as Gray followed Clay and the latter continuously evaded the former. In the third round, Gray entered aggressively and successfully connected some short distanced jabs.
The fourth and the fifth round, most probably, were the decisive one as in the fourth five-minute clash Gray cornered Clay with the octagon wall and pounded him for some time.
After winning the bout Gray stated, “I thought Guida came to fight. I came to fight. I wanted to get bloody and have fun. It was a five-round fight, and I wanted to prove to people I could go a full five. I thought I won that fight fair and square with all
three judges, but I guess it was a split decision.”
Gray has finally returned on the win track and most probably will move up slightly in the title contention scenario. Guida, on the other hand, has received his 13th career loss.
