Gray Maynard makes comeback scheduled to take on Clayton Guida on UFC on Fox 4 – UFC news
Gray Maynard, Ultimate Fighting Championship’s former number one lightweight contender, will make his comeback in a five-round non-title main event skirmish with former Strikeforce lightweight champion Clayton Guida, on June 22, 2012.
The bout will take place at Fox television’s fourth UFC episode ‘UFC on Fox4’ and the octagon for the event will be set up at Atlantic City, New Jersey, United Sates. Gray and Clayton both are considered as UFC’s best lightweights who have accomplished much
in their impressive careers.
Gray, 32, has been in a total 13 mixed martial art bouts and came out victorious in 10. He has collected just two wins by knockout and a whopping eight by either split or unanimous decision.
Maynard, infamous as ‘The Bully’, is well known for his arch rivalry with former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar, a hostility that led to an epic aggressive and raging three-bout trilogy.
Gray in his first encounter with Frankie on April 2008 nailed the young surging lad but Frankie did not stop at that and called on Maynard again in January 2011. The duo collided in the octagon for the UFC lightweight title and the bout ended in a draw.
In the last skirmish in October 2011, Maynard lost the bout via knockout and Frankie retained the lightweight gold. In addition to the Frankie trilogy, Gray has also collected the honour of pinning Nate Diaz, Jim Miller, Rich Clementi, Dennis Silver and
others.
Clay Guida, widely known as ‘The Carpenter’, has been in a total 41 bouts and came out victorious in 29. He is considered as one of the most feared submission specialists and has collected a whopping 15 wins by making the opponent submit. The 30-year-old
belligerent has nailed four men by knockout and nine by decision.
In November 2011 Clayton fought Ben Henderson, the current UFC lightweight champion and lost the bout via unanimous decision. Since then the American ‘Guido’ has remained outside the octagon.
While commenting about his upcoming engagement, Clayton Guida commented, “Gray Maynard is still a top-three fighter in the lightweight division. A big win over him gets me right back in title contention. After coming off a close (unanimous decision) loss
to Ben Henderson, who holds the belt now, beating a very tough opponent like Gray Maynard puts me in a very good position. It's a good fight for both of us.”
At the moment the remaining fight card is still needed to be announced and UFC management will announce further details of the event soon.
