Grease an as alternative fuel?

Since we are making some new alternative fuels like ethanol, which is made from corn, and some car companies are making cars that can run on water, do you think it's possible to take grease, something we have so much of, and turn it into an alternative fuel?

  1. It may be a bit difficult -- one of the key properties of an effective grease is that it does not burn.  Grease is meant to work under a lot high heat environments and not break down chemically or burn.

Grease that works for things that move in a cold environment may be a possibility.  I don't know about that, so there may be a grease that is in large supply that could burn as a fuel because it was not designed or doesn't have heat resistant properties of other greases.

  2. Yes. But it's a tough sell. Grease has the potential to spew 37 times the volume of methane as cattle waste.

But it also gives off CO-2 in the process. Though methane can be compressed relatively easily, CO-2 practically needs cryogenic, cascading refrigeration and staged-compression.

  4. Well they do turn used cooking oil into bio diesel. If you mean the stuff that McDonalds uses to fry your food with, then they are already doing it.

  5. Yes.

    It's called biodiesel.

Mix vegetable oil with methanol and lye and skim off the thick part that floats. The bottom part is biodiesel.
