Great Britain's Women Fencers capture silver and bronze medals at Cole World Cup of Sabre
The International Federation of Fencing, Fédération Internationale d'Escrime, conducted Cole World Cup in all Men's and Women's Sabre category, which was organised by British Fencing Association on June 18 and June 19. The British Women captured silver and
bronze medal in Women’s Sabre today on June 18.
Cole World Cup took place at The Gateshead Leisure Centre, Gateshead. A total of seventeen fencers from three countries, including Great Britain, Argentina and Australia participated in the competition. Argentina sent only two women athletes, while Australia
sent only one female fencer. Although British fencers could not grab the gold medal in the competition, but they took silver and all bronze medals. Argentina’s Maria Belen Perez Maurice clinched the gold medal by defeating Kira Roberts.
Roberts and Maria qualified for the quarter-final by winning all the bouts of pool matches. Nine fencers were eliminated in the pool round. Roberts defeated another British female fencer, Jennie Tillot, in the quarter-final round with 15-9 touches and qualified
for the semi-finals round. In that bout, Roberts was put into fight against British Margret McWilliams which was won by Roberts with a five-point lead. Unfortunately, Roberts could not survive against Maria in the play-off and lost a close bout of 15-12.
British fencers could not win the title of the day, but they were successful in winning most of the medals in the sabre event. Moreover, British fencers grabbed most of the top 10 spots in the event. Australian Alexandra Carroll lost her bout in quarter-final
and was able to secure the fifth place in the competition.
