Great Britain Gymnastics team reaches World Championship’s final
The commendable performance of Beth Tweddle on the uneven bars did its job for pushing Britain’s women gymnastics team into the finals of the World Gymnastics held in Rotterdam.
Tweddle, the defending champion, who stands on the third position on the bars, struggled well on the floor. As the qualifying competitions ended, Great Britain’s team had finally.
Tweddle looked rather content with the performance of her team. While expressing her hopes about the final event she said that there were strong chances for them to bag a medal in the event.
The tournament was important as it marked the beginning of qualification for the gymnastics event to be held at the London Olympics 2012. As the qualifying round ended, it culminated in sending the top eight teams to the Ahoy Arena through to the finals,
which were still to be conducted.
Moreover, the top 24 teams of the qualifying round would get the privilege to compete for the title at the World Championships going to be held in Tokyo next year.
As a matter of fact the teams, which could not qualify for the upcoming Tokyo event, would not participate in the 2012 London Olympics either. However, the rule would not apply to the individual performances.
The teams that would be heading to Tokyo would compete for the top six qualifying spots for gymnastics at the 2012 Olympic Games. Hence, the Rotterdam 2010 was a vital stepping stone event to the games, where success came to the British contingent without
much trouble.
The British gymnasts have shown a significant improvement in their performance as just five months ago, both the men’s and women’s teams at the European Championships could only bag silver medals. In the European event, women’s team stood behind the Russian
contingent, however, their performance at the World Gymnastics event have proved that they are a continuously improving force and perhaps the strongest contender for the London 2012 Games.
The praise British gymnasts have been gathering from the spectators around the globe are not only boosting their morale, they are also increasing the pressure upon them. With the bar of expectations consistently going up, for Tweddle, Smith and rest of the
squad it would be a test of nerves to improve performances at each major event.
Though an increase of age has started posing concerns about the performance of Tweddle, she is consistently proving to be a World class gymnast when it comes to the bars. At the World Championships, she was the second best performer with a score of 15.600.
Duo He Kexina stood first with slightly better scores. Commenting upon her commendable performance the girl said that she was pleased with her performance on the bars. However, she had a bit of a disappointment for not doing too well on the floor where she
got double minded.
The gymnast was happy with the way the bars had worked for her this year. In last year’s championships she had fallen from the bars while qualifying inside London’s O2 Arena. Describing her success in a humorous way she said that she would take it one year
at a time. She had got the bars wrong last year and she got the floor wrong this year.
Besides deciding the fate of the teams, the World championships also provided a chance to individuals for qualifying for the finals. For Tweddle, the results were impressive enough to lead her to the bars final. However, she could not make it into the floor’s
final rendering her unable to defend her World title.
Imogen Cairns, the double Commonwealth Games champion had been promoted to England’s team for World Championships after her performance at the Delhi games. The girl continued to impress her selectors as well as the spectators as she made it to the vault
final in Rotterdam.
The 21-years old managed to post a score of 14.195. At the performance of GB team gymnastics the analysts were of the view that consistently well performing seniors and equally talented juniors definitely have the potential to carve a new history for their
side in the upcoming big event.
