    Wales - Welsh

    Scotland - Gaelic

    England - english.

Wales: flag of St. David and the Y Ddraig Goch (Red dragon).

    Scotland: St. Andrews cross.

    NATIONAL ANTHEMS:

  2. I don't really understand your question.Wales is not an independent country. It is a country within Great Britain.Wales is competing in the 2008 Olympics as part of Britain.

  3. Wales is not an independent country/principality. It is part of Great Britain along with Scotland and England. Great Britain is itself part of the United Kingdom with Northern Ireland.

Therefore all four countries of the UK compete as one nation at the Olympics. Nicola Cooke, who won Britain's first Gold in Beijing,  is from Wales.

  4. Wales is a Principality in the geographical area of Great Britain, your question is like saying North America or Canada.

Wales is ruled under British Government and has athletes taking part in the UK team.

Today the first Welsh Olympic medal was won in 36 years by Nicole Cooke. It was a gold in cycling !

  5. Interesting historical facts about Wales:

    1) Although the people of Wales were among the Celts living in the British Isles from before the time of the Romans, Edward I's 13th century defeat of Llewedyn completed England's conquest of Wales.  During the reign of Henry VIII, the Laws in Wales Acts (1535-1542) made England and Wales a single legal entity.  The Wales and Berwick Act (1746) stipulated that all laws that applied to England also applied to Wales.  Hence, English Common Law, or case law, applies in the Welsh legal system, although a few local laws apply only to Wales that don't apply to England or the rest of the United Kingdom.

    2) Because of Wales' secondary legal status to England within the UK, Wales is sometimes called a principality.

    3)  Since the 19th century, however, Wales has been in the process of devolving from the UK.  In 1999 the Welsh finally had their own National Assembly. The current first minister for Wales is Rhodri Morgan.  A Secretary of State for Wales has a place in the UK cabinet, and 30 MPs represent Wales in the House of Commons.

    4) The name "Wales" is a Saxon word meaning "foreigner"; the Wales themselves called their country "Cyrnu", and their word for the English is "Saesson" (a cognate for Saxon similar to the Gaelic "Sassenach").

    5) Wales has very little arable land.  Accordingly, since the 18th century, mining and metallurgy have been Wales principal industries.  Since the 1970s, a restructured Welsh economy employs more workers in light indurstry and services, however.

    6)  Very few Welsh speak only Welsh, but 20 percent are bilinugal speakers of Welsh and English while 16.3 percent can speak, write, and read Welsh in addition to English.

    7)  The Wesh penninsula is about the size of the US state of Massachusetts or the Central American country of El Salvador.

    8)  The Welsh are famous for their singing.  Many famous actors and entertainers are also natives of Wales: Richard Burton, Timothy Dalton, Anthony Hopkins, and Catherine Zea Jones, for example.

    9) The Welsh Methodist revival of the 18th century led to the establishment of the Calvinistic Methodist Presbyterian Church of Wales in 1823.  By the middle of the 19th century, most Christians in Wales belonged to Nonconformist churches (the Church of Wales, Baptists, and Congregationalists). The Temperance Movement also was very strong in Wales.

    10) Jones is the surname most associated with Wales.  Many famous Americans were of Welsh ancestry, however:  Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, John Marshall, Sinclair Lewis, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Sinclair Lewis, for example.  More recently, Hilary Clinton, Tom Cruise, Donny and Marie Osmond, and Andy Griffith claim Welsh descent.

The first medal winner for the United Kingdom in the 2008 Olympics, Nichole Cooke, is a native of Wales.  She competed in a biking event.

Another internationalist champion cyclist from Wales in Gerain Thomas.  Eleven-times gold medalist paraolympic athlete, Tanni Grey-Thompson is from Wales, as is gootballer Ryan Giggs, who plays for Manchester United.  Rugby is the favorite Welsh team sport.
