Great Britain & Ireland must win to spice up Curtis Cup
The 37th Curtis Cup is going to be played from June 8 to 10, 2012, at The Nairn Golf Club, Scotland, with Great Britain & Ireland and America poised to overrun each other.
The Curtis Cup, this year, is expected to stage a tough battle between Americans and their rivals Great Britain & Ireland.
Observers have given interesting predictions for this year’s Cup, saying that Great Britain & Ireland will put their best foot forward to snatch a long-sought victory.
America appears to be in a stronger position, as it has won most of the events held so far. The question that rules the headlines is that which team will be the winner of the Cup?
Eyes are set on the players of GB & Ireland, as they have not performed their best in most of the events of the Cup.
The Curtis Cup, which typically pits the United States and the International team, comprising players from across the Great Britain and Ireland, has seen America rack up 28 victories out of total 36 events played in its history.
While on the other hand, the players from GB & Ireland have managed to win only 8 events so far. The critics have been raising questions regarding the strength of GB and Irish players.
The first event of the Curtis Cup played in 1932 saw players from United States gain the upper hand, trampling their rivals by massive 5½ and 3½.
Combined strength from players on the Britain side was once again foiled in the second event held in 1934 at Chevy Chase Club.
After losing 6 Cups in a row, the GB & Ireland picked up pace, winning the 1952 event by 5-4.
In 1956 and 1958, the GB & Ireland kept the momentum going, as they grabbed victories, dispelling concerns regarding their incompetency.
After the victory in 1958, GB & Ireland faced a series of defeats at the hands of their American rivals.
The defeats seemed to seal the fate of players of Britain and Ireland, leading fans to wonder if they would succeed ever again.
This year, the GB & Ireland appeared to be in high spirits but they unexpectedly faced a situation that took a serious toll on their roster.
The LGU (Ladies Golf Union) had already named players, who confirmed their participation, but a rising player, Charley Hull decided to pull out form the Cup.
The decision of Hull came as a severe blow to the GB & Ireland.
The reason for Hull to quit the much-hyped Curtis Cup was that she received invitation to play the Kraft Nabisco Championship, which she accepted without wasting her time.
Analysts have said that Hull’s absence can work against GB & Ireland, as she was one of most talented young golfers in England.
Aged only 16 years, Hull has grabbed attention by exhibiting a phenomenal game.
This is why the officials of Kraft Nabisco Championship put their trust in her, giving her a chance to play among some of the big names in women’s golf.
Although the squad named by LGU officials does not include Hull, there are a number of competent players who can pose a challenge to their American adversaries.
Amy Boulden, who has been confirmed to play at Nairn, is a battle-hardened player. She can give Americans a run for their money.
Boulden was part of the GB and Ireland squad that won the Astor Trophy by beating the International team comprising players from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa.
Experts have said that in order to spice up the Cup, a victory for GB & Ireland is a must. No matter how tough the battle at Nairn may get, GB & Ireland will do their best to record a much-needed victory.
