Great Britain and Ireland posts early gains at the Vivendi Seve Trophy against European team
The first round of the Vivendi Seve Trophy is underway at the St-Nom-La-Bretèche in Paris, France, and the Great Britain and Ireland (GB & I) squad seems to have taken the better off the European team until the nine holes of the opening session. Spanish
veteran, Miguel Angel Jimenez was invited to take the first stroke of the day for being a close friend and compatriot of the late Seve Ballesteros.
Jimenez is teamed up with countryman, Pablo Larrazabal against the sturdy Brit and Irish team comprising of Simon Dyson and Welshman, Jamie Donaldson. The English duo stepped on the heat right from the beginning of the Match Play event, pulling in birdies
to edge past the European duo. Jimenez has pulled in the lone birdie of the event so far and is under pressure from the beginning of the event.
The English rampage was more brutal in the next group which tee-ed off in the morning. Scott Jamieson and Ross Fisher of GB & I pulled in four birdies in the front nine of the first round. European duo, Raphael Jacqueline and Peter Hanson were able to card
just one birdie through the six-hole stretch.
World Number Two, the highest ranked player in the event, Lee Westwood, is leading the third round along with his teammate, Mark Foster and carded a birdie at par-three, 3rd to stay 1-up of the European duo, Francesco Molinari and Anders Hansen.
Smart swinging from David Horsey and Open Championship winner, Darren Clarke seems to have taken charge in the fourth group where young Horsey pulled in two birdies to stay ahead of the European team comprising of Matteo Manassero and Nicolas Colsaerts.
The fifth and the last group comprising of GB & I team of Robert Rock and Ian Poulter, and the European team of Alexander Noren and Thomas Bjorn are equally poised for the moment with both teams carding one birdie each.
The next rounds of the event are expected to have a nail-biting competition, ensuring hordes of spectators on the course. GB & I has won the five previous events in a row.
