Great Britain and Ireland win the Vivendi Seve Trophy yet again – Golf news
Great Britain and Ireland (GB & I) came back in the later part of the final day at the Vivendi Seve Trophy to overpower the European Team and win the cup for the sixth consecutive time in 11 years. Trailing the GB & I team by 11 ½-6 ½, European captain,
Jean Van De Velde made some drastic last moment decisions in an attempt to eventually turn the tables on the GB & I team.
He was successful to a great extent when most European players won their respective rounds early in the day and were all set to break the winning streak of the GB & I, but three prominent players from the GB & I hammered some glorious rounds to keep the
European entourage at bay. Van De Velde said, “It was extremely close, even going down the stretch.”
Paul McGinley, captain of the GB & I team, lauded the efforts of his teammates who held on to their nerves even when the European team had almost overpowered them at the start of the day. McGinley said, “Lucky I had the team well balanced out, and had not
just experience but guys in form balanced throughout the team, so they came through in the end.”
While many big guns on the GB & I side were put to silence at the start of the first round at St-Nom-La-Bretèche in Paris, France, Scott Jamieson held his ground firmly facing the sweeping European tide all alone. Playing against Spaniard Pablo Larrazabal,
Jamieson wrestled his way to victory in a well-balanced showdown, winning by 1 hole. He won six holes against Larrazabal’s five to boost his team’s confidence.
Ian Poulter did the rest of the damage when he took over young Matteo Manassero, also wining by 1 hole. Velde said, “As Paul mentioned, it could have swung either way. All credit to Poulter for making three birdies in five holes. You're rarely going to lose
a game when that happens when you are only one down.”
Mark Foster won his round against local favourite, Raphael Jacquelin, when he clinched the round by 1 hole. Ross Fisher and Peter Hanson halved their respective rounds with GB & I lifting the trophy by 15 ½-12 ½.
