Great Britain beat Pakistan, 3-2 on Day 3 of the 20th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup: Hockey News
Great Britain emerged victorious over Pakistan by 3-2 at the 20th Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey Cup, contested on the 3rd day at the Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey Stadium in Ipoh, Malaysia on May 08.
The two teams took a one-all deadlock with them to the sidelines at the end of the first half of play. Robert Moore managed the first goal for Great Britain in the 7th minute, while Sohail Abbas converted a short-corner to level the score with
four minutes left in the first half of play.
In the second half of play, the English side continued their attacks during the first few minutes. With two minutes into the second half, Jonathan Clarke managed to steal the ball inside the D-Line and sent a powerful flick past Imran Shah to score the second
goal for the British team.
After conceding the second goal, Pakistan missed a golden sitter in the hands of Shakeel Abbasi in the 41st minute of the game.
The pace of the game continued to accelerate with passage of the time. Both sides were started more offensive game in order to score more and more goals. Pakistan earned another short corner in the 48th minute of the match, but Sohail Abbas failed
to convert it into a goal. The game continued with attacks and counter-attacks.
In the 61st minute of the game, Pakistani players attacked the English side, but the ball was blocked by the side-board. However, Jonathan Clarke while taking the ball doubled the lead in the 62nd minute to put Great Britain ahead on
the score-board.
In the 64th minute, Haseem Khan converted a short-corner on tap from Shakeel Abbasi and reduced the lead down to a single point. In the very next minute, they earned another penalty corner, but to no avail. A high action observed in the last two
minutes with four strikes from each side, but could not change the face of the score-board. Great Britain won the game by a single point, 3-2.
The final match of the day will be contested between New Zealand and South Korea. This will be second match for New Zealand of this Malaysian tournament, whereas the third for South Korea.
