Great Britain captures bronze in Team Free Combination Event in the 2011 Len European Champions Cup
Great Britain has captured the bronze medal in the Team Free Combination Event at the 2011 Len European Champions Cup, which was held in Sheffield, on Sunday, May 22.
Ukraine took home the gold medal against Italy, with a fringe margin of 93.440 to 91.770 points, in the respective meet.
The title is the first one for the British Women’s Synchronised Team in the Team Free Combination event, since 1994.
In the Duet final, Russia claimed the gold medal, while Olivia Allison and Jenna Randall wound up at fifth spot in the following event.
After securing the bronze in the team-free combination, the British Synchro Team took a huge sigh of relief. Great Britain's Lauren Smith said, “That is our best event and we wanted to really go for it. We got bronze at the German Open and we wanted to do
it here in front of a home town. The crowd has been phenomenal again and we have just loved having that many people here.”
She further added that the win has been an individual lift for their players. Despite the pressure of the home crowd, the team wanted to put up a show and keep their hopes high of performing well in the future.
On the other hand, legendary synchronised swimming icons Natalia Ischenko and Svetlana Romashina captured the whole attention of the Sheffield crowd and grabbed the highest score of 98.750, in the Duet Meet.
Ona Carbonell and Andrea Fuentes of Spain secured the silver medal with a total score of 96.340, while Ukraine earned bronze and Italy settled for the fourth spot in the respective event. The Italian synchronised swimming team was not satisfied with their
performance after the end of the Duet meet.
Allison of Great Britain said that they have improved in their duet synchronised swimming to a great extent as compared to their past performances.
Allison said, “We went into the final focused on the little synchronisation errors and watching it back on the big screen as we got out I could see that we managed to correct them. We scored better than in the prelims too which is always a focus when you
go into a competition.”
The British Synchronised Swimming Team is determined to vie in strongly at the upcoming World Championships in Shanghai, this July. The team is also preparing hard for the next year’s Olympic Games in London.
With a spirited performance from their national synchronised swimming team in the Len European Champions Cup, British Swimming will have high expectations from their side in the upcoming major events.
