Great Britain comes at sixth place in the London Handball Cup – Handball News
Handball fans were enthralled for five days when women handball teams competed at the London Handball Cup was held at the 2012 London Olympic arena. The London Handball cup featured six teams divided into two groups. Enthusiastic
handball fans saw their favourite teams play in what the management referred to as a ‘test’ event.
The hosts, Great Britain, were hopeful to win the tournament and increase the morale of their participating women’s handball team ahead of the 2012 London Olympics.The players, too, from the Great Britain, were excited to be part
of a tournament. Their morale were already high for they all were playing at the newly constructed Handball Arena, which will make its official Olympic debut at the next year’s Olympic Games in London.
On November 23, 2011, the first day of the competition, Great Britain met the African team of Angola. The British women’s handball team barely clinched a win over Angola with a score of 22-20. The team management of the Great Britain
side were also in high spirits to see their team progress in the tournament. On November 25, 2011, the third day of the event saw team Great Britain in trouble. They faced the Austrian national women’s handball team and could not secure a win against them.
The Austrians dominated the match from the start as the British players felt like in a crisis. The win they enjoyed over the Angolan side faded the moment the loss to Austria was evident. Great Britain could not carry on their
winning run as Austria defeated the home team. On the fourth day of the competition, held on November 26, 2011, Great Britain was playing for survival.
At the start of the London Handball Cup, the British players were looking forward for a tournament win but on the fourth day, they played against the Slovakian team in an attempt to secure a sixth place. It was a consolation win
for team Great Britain as they defeated Slovakia 22-17. The test event in the form of the London Handball Cup was a resounding success as the management and officials were pleased as the facilities and equipments operated in order and as planned.
For the Great Britain players, the tournament was a revelation for they have to regain the team spirit before the 2012 London Olympics. The left wing player of team Great Britain, Holly Lam-Moores said, “We were very disappointed
after the Austria game, but we have had a great campaign overall.”
