Great Britain finishes seventh by beating Germany: Day nine – European Water Polo Championships
Great Britain has finished seventh by beating Germany in their fourth Women’s water polo match on ninth day of the 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Tuesday, January 24 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
British squad overwhelmed Germany in their classification match for 7th-8th position and proved their mettle by a margin of just two goals. Germany tried hard to occupy seventh position but they suffered loss with a 13-11 defeat at the hands of British team.
After eight days of qualifying session, the European Championships are now moving towards the quarterfinal. These championships are of momentous importance as they precede the way for 2012 London Olympic Games and provide a chance to international team to improve their deficiencies.
Both teams engaged in a neck-to-neck game with each other and the score remained 10-all in the four-quarter game, however, British team managed a lead of two goals in the extra time to claim seventh spot of the tournament.
The first quarter saw scintillating efforts from both sides, where both squads scored two goals each. The same continued in the second quarter, where both team players accomplished four goals for their respective teams and the score remained 6-6 after the halftime.
The third quarter saw unrelenting efforts of British team that ascended on the scorecard by achieving three goals while German team managed to score a single goal only. The tables turned in the fourth quarter, where German team took the lead by notching up three goals but Great Britain was able to draw the match and forced extra time by marking one goal.
Subsequently, British team elevated their efforts and clinched three goals in the first half of extra time while German squad failed to show any improvement on their end. In the second half of extra time, Germany scored one goal while British team remained unsuccessful in improving their scores, but grabbed victory with a lead of two points.
The session ended after the completion of the match while British players claimed that they will work hard to improve their position at the upcoming London Games.
