Great Britain makes it to final phase of 2012 CEV Continental Cup Semifianls – Volleyball news
Shauna Mullin-Zara Dampney and Denise Johns-Lucy Boulton of Great exhibited spectacular feat on day-2 of the 2012 CEV Continental Cup Semifinals, which took centre stage on Wednesday, May 16 in Severs, France.
The GBR pairs played a total of four matches and finished the day with 3-1 record. Success on the day-2 moved GBR into the final phase of the tournament, where they will take on Spanish opponents. The final showdown of the tournament will be staged on Saturday,
May 19.
Great Britain had closed the first day with 3-1 record and it needed only four matches to qualify for the finals. Johns-Boulton overpowered Slovakia’s Michalovicova-Cizmarova in the first fixture of the day, which continued for 28 minutes. The Slovakian
pair failed to cope with the power of GB pair and dropped the decision in two sets. GB players, on the other hand, played to their full potential and marched away with victory, 2-0 (21-9, 21-15).
In the next flight, Mullin-Dampney of Great Britain and Dubovcova-Nestarcova from Slovakia contested their skills. The match was full of action as both sides remained hand-in-hand from start to end. British pair gave a really good competition to Slovak counterparts
in the first set but suffered the loss with a narrow gap of three points, 18-21.
The second set of the match progressed in the similar fashion. Long rallies were exchanges and players on both sides jumped on every little opportunity to score points. Eventually, Slovakian team emerged successful as they posted 21-18 on board and put an
end to the tussle.
After beating the one GB pair, pumped up duo of Dubovcova-Nestarcova clashed with second team of Great Britain, which consisted of Johns and Boulton. It was a real test for two teams as both of them captured their previous matches. Johns-Boulton of GB proved
to be better in the match and posted 2-0 (21-16, 21-18) win over Slovak team. The match result was out in 34 minutes.
In the meantime, Mullin-Dampney of Great Britain got the chance to prove their endeavours in the fourth fixture of the day. They displayed better performance against Slovakia’s Michalovicova-Cizmarova and swept their feet in two straight sets. GB duo dominated
the competitors and ended the match with 2-0 (21-16, 21-15) victory.
GB finished the day-2 of the 2012 CEV Continental Cup Semifinal with 3-1 record and advanced to the final phase of the tournament salted for Saturday.
Denise Johns of GBR expressed delight about the overall result of the second day competition. She stated, “We were a little disappointed with our performance this morning but we are also happy with the result of this afternoon’s matches and to have qualified
for the final against Spain.”
