Great Britain’s Ben Ainslie affirming his grip on 2012 Finn Gold Cup title – Sailing News
With some excellent sailing skills on the fifth day of the 2012 Finn Gold Cup, Great Britain’s Ben Ainslie successfully retained his top form and the leading podium position of the overall standings.
With two more bullets in his score line, the British sailor clinched 10 points in the end after participating in nine races, which also included a discard.
Ainslie grabbed the fleet lead from the very beginning with his classy sailing display in the race course and was able to maintain his lead with noticeable finishes later in the event.
The only low finishes he got were two third position in Race 2 and 4. However, these lower positions did not affect his overall result and the Brit kept his leading position.
The weather conditions were strong on the fifth day as the winds were blowing from 20 to 25 knots which were quite a challenge for the fleet to cope with. However, Ainslie took it as a challenge and completed two scheduled races for the day on time.
Along with some heavy gusty breeze, there were some huge waves, which rose up to three meters high and were ready to topple down the boats but most of the fleet sustained their balance and continued the regatta proceedings on Day 5.
Ainslie believes that the weather conditions played important role in maintaining his overall lead as he likes to sail under heavy winds.
The first day leader of the standings, Great Britain’s Edward Wright still kept his second place with the help of a discard race. Another lower finish might drag him down in the leader-board so he will be looking to be careful.
