Great Britain’s Ian Williams retains top place in Open Match Racing Rankings – Sailing News
After putting up some excellent sailing skills throughout the season, Great Britain’s Ian Williams was able to retain his top spot in the annual International Sailing Federation (ISAF) World Match Racing Rankings.
Williams claimed this rank last year after he performed brilliantly throughout the circuit. The British sailor continued his impressive form in the recent sailing season to retain his World Number one position.
Williams opened his circuit campaign with a superb win in the 2011 Congressional Cup where he clinched the top position along with a bonus and earned a total of 1020 points. After having a superb start like that, Williams was feeling very confident for the
rest of the season.
The Briton’s confidence boosted with such a great beginning of the circuit. He continued his winning streak in the second event of 2012 VIII Open de España where he topped the overall standings once again and clinched 980 points to add to his current rank.
However, after these two events, Williams tumbled down a bit but still he managed to finish the next couple of events, which included 2010 St Moritz Match Race - World Match Racing Tour, 2010 Korea Match Cup - World Match Racing Tour and 2010 Sunseeker Australia
Cup, as he was able to claim second podium place overall.
After that the British sailor failed to improvise and finished on lower podiums. He came back in business in the 2011 Monsoon Cup - World Match Racing Tour where he hit the leading podium spot in the overall standings to regain his form.
Winning the last event of the 2011 World Match Racing Tour, the ISAF Match Racing World Championships was like icing on the cake. The event victory confirmed his grip on the top rank of the season.
