Great Britain’s Men's foilists getting all set for the 2012 Olympic Games: Fencing News
The Great Britain Men's foilists had been busy last week, getting trained in Salzburg, Austria to prepare for the mega event 2012 London Olympic Games ahead.
After a few days of intense training, the host nation organised a team tournament comprising of two Austrian teams, three British teams and one team each from Croatia, Israel, Moldova and Ukraine. Among these, Israel and Ukraine participated in the event
for the first time.
All three teams of Great Britain ended up successful, occupying all the three podium places for themselves.
The three teams comprised of three members that include Kruse, Halstead and Jeffries in group 1 named GBR 1; Kenber, Davis and Mepstead in GBR 2 and Fitzgerald, Rosowsky and Peggs in GBR 3.
GBR 3 played against the top Austrian team and qualified for the next round by beating down the host at 45-38. Surprisingly, they surpassed the strong Ukrainian team by defeating them with a 45-36 score point difference, heading into the finals against their
native team GBR 1.
In the final round, GBR 1 defeated the GBR 3 for the gold-medal win with a score-gap of 45-30, leaving GBR 3 with a silver-medal win.
The bronze medal was taken up by GBR 2 in a battle against the Ukrainian team by trouncing them at 45-35 score points.
Great Britain fencing team’s Head Coach, Ziemek Wojciechowski, was very happy with the outcomes and commented at the conclusion of the tournament, “This was a pleasing result clearly showing the strength in depth of our squad.”
According to him, the team seems ready to depart for the Far East tour, to compete in the first Men’s Foil Olympic Qualifiers ahead.
Meanwhile, the British Fencing body has released the fixtures of the 2011 British National Championships that will begin from November 12, 2011.
The individual event of the championship will comprise of two stages namely the qualifiers and the finals. The qualifier rounds will be carried out on November 12-13 followed by the final round on December 10, followed by a Grand Gala dinner.
However, the British National Team Competition of the championship will take place on December 11, one day subsequent to the National finals of Wheelchair Fencing.
A total of 36 places will be there in the final round and the fencers who surpass the qualification stage will make it to the subsequent round.
Fencers with an age of 13 years as per January 1, 2012 will be eligible for the championship. A single entry will cover both the stages. The last date to send in entries is October 31, and the entries reaching late until November 7, will be required to deposit
double the actual fee of the event.
The fencers holding the top 20 national rankings of each weapon as at October 1, 2011 will be required to enter for the qualifiers, following which they will receive an automatic bye into the final round of the event. The list of those fencers who received
the automatic bye will be revealed on November 8, 2011.
