Great Britain’s Sir Peter Ogden leads 2012 Rolex Volcano Race Leg 1 – Sailing Update
Under some ideal wind conditions at the island of Capri in Italy, Great Britain’s Sir Peter Ogden was able to perform brilliantly and claim the overall lead of the 2012 Rolex Volcano Race Leg 1 with four points.
The British sailor on his boat, Jethou, sailed impressively on Italian waters under moderate winds collecting a bullet in one of the two scheduled races on Day 1.
The pressure started building over the fleet leader when the winds went a little lighter in the beginning of the day but Ogden did not lose his focus and kept his team’s passion alive. Their maxi, Jethou, reached first podium finish in the first race which placed them in a strong position.
However, the second race of the regatta did not finish according to Ogden’s hopes as they finished on third place. Nevertheless, with four points, they still managed to hit the leading podium spot with four points overall.
Locale favourite, Marco Rodolfi on their maxi Berenice Bis hit the second podium place with a bullet and a fourth place in both races of the day. Despite a lower finish at fourth place, Rodolfi was quite happy with his performance.
Speaking to the local media, Rodolfi said that they had a great race, making very few mistakes, navigating the islands very well and when there was a change in the wind they were in the right place to take advantage. It is still a surprise because there are many strong boats.
