Great Britain’s Team Aqua clinches lead at 2012 RC44 Puerto Calero Cup: Day 1
Great Britain’s Team Aqua put up a consistent sailing display in Puerto Calero to grab the leading podium place at the 2012 RC44 Puerto Calero Cup, the first regatta of the 2012 RC44 Championship Tour. The event got off to a flying start with some outstanding match racing competitions as the 14-boat RC44 fleet raced in six races on the first day.
The key to success for the British Team Aqua was their consistency during the regatta. The Briton crew was impressive on Puerto Calero waters with six straight wins on the opening day. Kiwi sailor, Cameron Appleton was the helmsman on Day 1 along with some familiar names around him like compatriot Andrew Estcourt and America’s Matt Cassidy, who made their success possible with a superb performance.
Appleton hailed his crew members saying that they really deserve credit for their triumph on the first day as they did a great job. He added that the races were tricky and every boat had issues but the crew played an important part in the team’s impressive lead.
Weather conditions in the Puerto Calero regatta were quite harsh and tricky with the wind building up to 20 knots north easterly during the races that at times troubled the fleet.
