Great Britain’s new star Heather Watson believes she could become top ranked player – Tennis News
British tennis sensation, Heather Watson, has said in a recent interview that she believes in herself and has everything which could take her to the world number one ranking.
Watson stated that she would not be playing on the WTA Tour if she thought the she could not become the top ranked player. The 20-year-old knows that every professional tennis player thinks on the same lines, so she would work
hard to achieve that.
“I definitely believe in myself. I wouldn’t be in the game if I didn’t. I have the mental toughness and the capability to do it. You know all these girls think the same thing, so it’s just who can do it, and I’m just going to do
whatever it takes,” said Watson.
The right-hander is having a dream season, giving a number of impressive performances in this year. She had started 2012 with a low ranking of 106 but now she is positioned at the 50th spot.
Watson became her country’s first player to win a tournament on the WTA Tour in the last 24 years by winning the HP Japan Open last week. With that performance, she also overtook her compatriot, Laura Robson, in the world rankings
and reclaimed the title of Great Britain’s number one player.
The Brit said, “My coach, Mauricio Hadad, said to me on the first day of the tournament, ‘You’re playing so well, this is your week to win’. So I decided to get gold crowns painted on my nails – and it worked. Now that I’ve won
a title, I feel I could have done it earlier on.”
Watson gave her breakthrough performance at the second Grand Slam of the season, the French Open, where she came through the qualifying draws and stunned the then world number 83, Elena Vesnina of Russia, in the first round. That
effort gave her confidence and she followed it up with a third round showing at the Wimbledon Championships.
The British hope will have a good chance to drastically improve her ranking in the first half of the next season, as she didn’t perform very well during that period in this year.
