Question:

Great SAT score of 1840 but math was only 510...?

My daughter just took the SAT and got an overall score of 1840 - 680 for reading, 650 for writing, an 11 out of 12 on her essay, and a dismal 510 in math. Obviously, she's not going to be studying anything math-related in college! She has a 3.5 GPA and is in the upper 1/3 of her class of about 600 kids. Knowing that she'll be going into an English-related field, how will colleges look at her SAT scores? And aside from hiring a SAT-tutor (is that even worthwhile?), how can we help her get these scores up to a more respectable number? She did similarly well on the ACT - composite score of 26, with excellent results in the English sections, and not-so-great results in math. She's interested in attending Hillsdale College, Carleton College, Colby College or perhaps Middlebury. Thanks!

  1. Have you looked at the average SAT scores of students going to these colleges?  These are pretty good SAT scores, I find it hard to believe that there would be that much of an issue in terms of admissions.  I'd look into the admissions information at these colleges.  If she's around the average score, I wouldn't worry too much.  Has she studied any of the SAT materials?  Was this her first time testing?  These might be some other options.

  2. Ok

    SAT tutoring is complete BS

I increased my sat score without some fancy tutor to about 300 points it was like 280 or something but I did old fashioned studying and i improved my score

Just make her take math practice tests i went from a 500 to a 610 in math im bad at it too

    but yeah so do that

  3. SAT tutoring is definitely an option for your daughter, but I would recommend you purchase several study guides and have her work out of those instead. When I was applying to universities, I took a 900 dollar Kaplan course, which turned out to be a waste of my parents' money and my time. I opted to study with an underground SAT guide sold on a website I found on Yahoo Answers.(Tutorfox.com's SAT guide, I remember buying the guide for a meager 10 dollars) That, along with the Princeton Review's SAT guide helped me raise my score from the1700's to the 2300's, and get into all the school's I applied to. I definitely reccomend you check both of those books out.

    Regards,

    Ben
