Great disasters?

i need some great disasters!!! i have to do a project on great disasters and it has to be in the united states. i would like it to be in the 18th or 19th century. it needs to be a man-made disaster, too, please. thanx!

If you can use one from the 20th century, it's hard to beat the George W. Bush presidency for a great disaster.
