We are going to North Yorkshire for our hols on saturday. Can anyone recommend any excellent places to visit/ things to do for families.

We have two girls age 3 and 7.

We would like to take them out on a steam train any suggestions of where we can go.

Any tips would be appreciated.

  1. pickering and catch the steam train to goathland (where heartbeat is filmed), york is a cool city and as others have said whitby, scarborough are seaside resorts, for quaintness try robin hoods bay or runswick bay....i hope the weather stays fine for you :-)

  2. I live in North Yorkshire in the Dales!

If you in the Wensleydale area, a must is the Wensleydale Railway (a steam train & a diesel) which goes around the surrounding villages!

Other suggestions I would say are, a theme park at Ripon (lightwater valley) or Flamingo land (has a kind of built in zoo!). Or 'Forbidden Corner' (google it) its very good for little nippers, and adults aswell - its a mini adventure!

    Cheers

  3. How about taking the steam train "Scarborough Spa Express" from either York or Harrogate to Scarborough. It runs during the middle of the week until the end of August, and is run by a company called West Coast Railways.

It isn't particularly cheap, but it is a real steam train running at full speed on a real railway line, rather than a "toy" one that trundles along slowly for half a mile or whatever!

  4. Robin Hood's Bay

    Whitby

    Goathland

    Filey

    Bridlington

    Scarborough

  5. Scarborough beach. It has donkeys, sand and amusement parks (the 3 year old might not like that, but give the 7 year old a handful of 2ps and she'll be sorted for the day).

It can be a bit windy, but otherwise fairly nice (as long as you like icecream and sandy chips)

What about Flamingo land? Never been, but it's some sort of amusement park- might be a bit zooish, I don't know. Interesting name, though!

  6. whitby is a lovely town  - we take our boys there a lot (now age 5 and 8 but been going since age 2 and 0).

You can crab fish off the quayside & the kids love it.  There is also a few of the usual tacky attractions and some fab walks - esp around the abbey.  Great fish and chips as well.

We usually stay in sandsend which is worth a detour as it is a lovely villiage with a beautiful "valley" filled with choc box cottages and friendly tethered goats.

York railway museum is good as well
