  2. The invasions into India by the Greek warlord, Alexander the Great, brought the Indian subcontinent into contact with Classical Greek culture, including sculpture and architecture. These invasions occurred within 70 years after Buddha's death.

    Out of this contact appeared the first representations of the Buddha (complete with Greek-style hair!) as an idealized human. Buddhist architecture was less influenced, although sculptural elements on buildings show several aspects of Greek style.

    Greek influence on Buddhist art was most prominent in the Greco-Bactrian kingdom, which today we call Afghanistan.
