Question:

Greece, Italy, Germany, Poland...is it safe?

Next summer I'll be going to Italy, Greece, & maybe Turkey. The summer after that I'll be going to Poland, Germany, Czech Republic, and Austria. (Both with my school)

And I'm just wondering, is it safe for me since I'm biracial/black?

I'll be 16 when I go to Italy & Greece, and 17 when I go to Germany. I don't want to be so far from home and be experiencing any type of prejudice or racism.

I'm sure Italy and Greece are okay, but my family and I are worried about Germany & Poland. (There was a Polish exchange student last year & she was openly racist. She was sent home early because of it.)

So, before I sign up and drop $7000 - would it be okay & safe?

Thanks to anyone who helps. =)

  1. Don't listen to the person above me, Poland is entirely safe for minorities. Trust me! There are many exchange students in universities and a lot of traveling groups from Africa!  You will love Poland. They are one of the most Catholic Countries in the World who got to church every Sunday. And in the 14th or 15th Century they allowed the Minority Jews into their country( Poland was the only country who allowed this). They are a very open natured people who love when people come visit their country no matter what their skin color!

    So Poland is deffinately an okay!

    ~~~To Viva La Vida:
    All I am doing is stating facts. And I know the Poles did not act correctly in WW2 with their Jews but you be in that position as the Poles were in and see how nice you act! and I know that going to church has nothing to do with it or being the most Catholic country, I was stating facts and you can't change facts! And what are you talking about I have no knowledge of history?! Did I say anything that is NOT correct?
    And there is no misinformation here.
  2. why not add philippines you are more safe,,, theres more beautiful beaches and friendly people
  3. In Italy, Germany, Austria you will be safe.
    In  Poland and Czech Republic you will be even more safer, probably you will make many friends there.
    In Greece you won't be safe at all! Just look what happened to Australian tourists in Greece these summer, American Embassy bombed in Athens,  look about terrorist organization EPEK (Е.П.Е.К.) on Crete, DENYING MINORITIES in Greece, racism and homophobia in Greece, army on the border with Macedonia (and buying a lot of weapon esc. from France), racism and insults to black football players... I recommend you not to go in Greece, before the become stable again.
    Edit:
    It is true that I'm from Greece neighbour small country. It is called Macedonia (USA have recognize by our name Republic of Macedonia), but it is not true that I hate greece and greeks. Easily you will find out how greeks are calling (insulting) my country name and our people., so why to expect that it will be different with you???
  4. i wish people would stop saying that about my beautiful country Germany. im white and my cousin is black, he grew up in Germany (Frankfurt i believe) and he mainly had probs with turks. just stay out of eastern Germany, west is the least racist and more open to blacks, they have alot of American military bases with blacks so you shouldn't get any problems.
  5. Don't worry, you will not face any problem in these countries. People, there, are very nice and warm (especially in Italy and Greece).
    As for a user who said all these bad things about Greece.... please don't take him seriously.
    He (and his compatriots) are from a neighboring to Greece small country and hate Greek people. So you will always hear them to say lies and insulting things about Greece.
    Have a nice time! You made great choices.. these countries are very beautiful and interesting.
    Of course you should always be careful....even in paradise ! : )
    Have fun !
  6. You will definitely be ok, don't worry, just try to keep an open mind and take in as much as possible from all the places you're visiting.
    Racism, at least the open form, is not a problem in Europe. There are deeper prejudices running into the system&social mechanisms, like employment and housing, but not open threats that you're concerned with.
    Please don't pay attention to malicious people whose only way to make themselves great is by belittling another nation.
    Apart from them, there are also those who have no idea of history, like Chloe here who's singing odes to Poland in the past, when she should know better than that. The fact that "They are one of the most Catholic Countries in the World who got to church every Sunday" means absolutely nothing. It doesn't make them better believers, or better people for that matter. And the claim that "in the 14th or 15th Century they allowed the Minority Jews into their country( Poland was the only country who allowed this)" is more sad than anything else, having in mind how they treated their Jews in WW2. Even the Poles not directly responsible still feel the shame for the cruelty they exercised over Jews. I don't want to say that the Polish are racist, only to correct the misinformation displayed here.
  7. $7,000 is a lot of money, if you are afraid that you might get a bad experience. If u go with your school u r probably safe but how u experience these countries (prejudices etc.) is hard to predict but u shouldn't generalize based on one polish girl. Germans are normally quite friendly, because the country is quite multicultural nowadays, but Poland might be different
  8. okay let me tell you this...my husband is Polish, I am 100% black and i'll be going to Poland in Oct.  I've done allot of research on this topic, and your best bet is to contact the US state department travel section.  They have tons of info  (factual info) on every country in the world, and they will be able to give you safety info on the countries that you will be visiting.  I did my research on  Poland, and i'm am beyond excited to go....even if i'll be the only black American for miles.
  9. According to the crime rates per country,Greece is the most safe country in Europe.
    Germany has high crime rate and chez republic and Italy are following.Poland is a little bit lower
    Turkey is very safe as well.
    Safety has nothing to do with racism.you might feel discriminated in every of these....
  10. Yeah, I've been there.  I have family members in Greece so..yeah.
    People will look at you weird, and touch your skin, but in most areas, they have seen black people. In Germany, it all matters where you go, like here. They see alot of black students from africa so...its no biggie.
    They like american blacks the most
