Greece beat Spain in preliminary round, Group B: Day seven – European Water Polo Championships
Greece’s national squad beat Spain in their third Women’s water polo qualifying match of Group ‘B’ on day seven of the 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Sunday, January 22 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
The Greek players experienced strong competition from their challenging squad throughout the four-quarter game, but with their relentless efforts, they snuggled victory by a margin of two goals. Spanish team suffered their second loss of the tournament with
an 8-6 defeat at the hands of Greek squad.
The European Championships are of significant importance as they pave the way for the 2012 London Olympic Games. These championships provide a chance to international teams to compete with each other and improve their strategy before the mega stage of sports.
Greek players proved their dominance over Spain in the first quarter, where they scored three goals and obstructed all efforts of their opposing team. In contrast, Spain failed to show any improvement on the scorecard and the score remained 3-0 after the
first round.
The situation was reversed in the second quarter, where the Spanish team elevated their efforts and stroke three goals in a row, blocking all efforts of their rival team. On the contrary, Greek players remained at nil and the score went up to 3-all after
the first half.
The third quarter saw unrelenting efforts of Greek team that improved their strategy and advanced on the points table by notching three goals. On the other hand, Spanish squad was able to add just one goal to their scorecard and the score remained 6-4 after
the third round.
In the fourth quarter, both teams tried hard to prove their mettle but they accomplished two goals against each other and the match ended with a clear win of Greece in the 32-minute game.
In addition, the arena was excited with the breath-taking efforts of both teams while the Greek players received a huge round of applause from the audience. Furthermore, Greece has now jumped to the semi-final of the tournament while Spain will contest against
Hungary in the quarterfinal on Tuesday, January 24.
