Greece finishes elimination round with a 2-0 record – Volleyball Europe
Greek Men’s Volleyball Team clinched success in both matches of the elimination round at the European Olympic Qualification Tournament. Greece was challenged by Bosnia & Herzegovina in the home and away matches. The first match was held on Saturday, September
3, while the second match took place on Sunday. Greecee played te first match on home soil and defeated their opponents. They posted 3-1 (25-20, 25-27, 25-21, and 25-16) on board to claim the first match.
The next match was also hosted by Greece and and the home team outshone the competitors in straight sets. Team Bosnia & Herzegovina failed to sustain the pressure and ended up receiving a 0-3 (18-25, 18-25, and 12-25) defeat.
Match overview
The opening phase of the game was evenly played. First set started out with an exchange of powerful serves and spikes. Theoklitos of Greece was quite handy on throwing long jump-serves. On the other side of the net, Bosnia’s Nemanja Bozic struggled for his
team and added quick points. Greece was just one point ahead of Bosnia at the first technical timeout. As the play resumed after break, Greek players came up with strong offensive attack and tried to stretch the gap of points. Nikolaos raised Greece’s score
via convincing attacks and created enough trouble for Bosnia’s defence expert.
Bosnian squad resisted to Greece’s strike but couldn’t hold them for long. Greek hitters managed widened the gap of points at the second mandatory stop 16-13. The rhythm and tone was set for Greece to win the first set. They continued with success and eventually
closed off first set at 25-18.
Bosnia & Herzegovina players were clearly dragged under pressure after losing the opening set. On contrary, Greek side made a strong opening in the second set and jumped to 5-point lead at first technical timeout. Bosnian libero Amir Curan saved some crucial
points by receiving the cross court shots. However, the mood o f the game didn’t change and Greeks held the control of operations in their hands. Bosnia trailed behind with a gap of six points at second timeout 16-10. Bosnia could hardly take the score to
18, while Greece achieved the set points 25-18.
Greece enjoyed top form in the third set and further tightened the screws of opponents. Bosnian team played under pressure and committed too many unforced mistakes. Moreover, the players looked visibly exhausted and gave out a shaky performance. Bosnia’s
score soared up a snail’s pace, while Greeks were totally on fire. They led the score with six points at the second technical break. Greece finished the third set with heavy margin of 13 points and announced match victory.
