Greece hammer Macedonia in preliminary round, Group A: Day two – European Water Polo Championships
Greek water polo team has hammered Macedonia in their second qualifying match of Group ‘A’ Men’s water polo on second day of the 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Tuesday, January 17 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
Greece, which already won its first match from Netherlands, has continued its winning streak by overpowering Macedonia with a difference of four goals. Macedonian squad suffered their first loss of the tournament at the hands of Greek team, as the score remained 10-6 after the game.
The Greek players showered their expertise in the first round, where they scored two goals while Macedonia failed to put any point on the scorecard and the round expired with a score of 2-0.
Just after the start of second round, Andreas Miralis of Greece accomplished a goal for his team. His effort was followed by Sasa Misic of Macedonia, who made a debut goal for his squad. After that, two more goals were scored by Greek players and the halftime expired with a score of 5-1.
The third quarter saw elevated efforts of both teams, where Macedonian squad ascended their score by one goal, but their dominance could not last for long and was trailed by Miralis, who added another goal for his team and the score remained 1-1 after the third round.
Both teams went on a rampage in fourth quarter and scored four goals each, but it was too late for Macedonia to fight back as they needed to overcome a gap of four goals to level the game. The score remained 4-4 after the fourth round and Greece grabbed a comfortable win by a margin of four goals.
With his tremendous contribution of four goals, Miralis played a significant role in his team’s victory and was nominated as the player of the match.
The spectators applauded for gruelling efforts of both teams that put together a great show in the second half of the game. In addition, Greece has remained unbeaten in the tournament so far and is planned to compete against Turkey in its third qualifying match on Thursday, January 19.
