Greece hammers Hungary in Women’s semi-final: Day eleven – European Water Polo Championships
Greece’s senior national team has hammered Hungary in the Women’s semi-final on eleventh day of the continued 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Thursday, January 26 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
Hungary engaged Greece in a neck-to-neck battle in the first three quarters of the game but failed to withstand commendable efforts of Greek squad in the fourth round and lost the match by a margin of two goals. Greek players made their way to the final
round with a 14-12 goals effort against Hungary in the four-quarter game.
With the forthcoming 2012 London Olympic Games, the European championships are of vital importance as these give an opportunity to international players to overcome their limitations before the mega event.
The arena witnessed gruelling efforts of Greek team in the first quarter, as they notched up four goals. Conversely, the Hungarian team was able to improve their score by two fractions and the score went up to 4-2 after the first round.
The Hungarian players elevated their efforts in the second quarter, where they outperformed three goals accomplishment of Greece by posting four goals. With their unimaginably strong struggle, Hungary managed to narrow down Greece’s lead to just one goal
as the score remained 7-6 after the first half.
Just like the second quarter, Hungarian players showed no mercy to their challenging squad and dominated the third round by advancing on the scorecard with four goals. On the other hand, Greek players once again failed to show any significant improvement
in their efforts and notched up three goals. The score turned up to 10-10 after the third quarter.
The situation reversed in the fourth round, where Greek squad took control of the ball and stroke four goals to ascend on the points table. In contrast, Hungarian players managed to score just two goals and lost the match.
Antigoni Roumpesi of Greece accomplished five goals and was declared player of the match for her significant effort. Furthermore, Greece will now compete with Italy for gold medal while Hungary will battle Russia for bronze medal of the tournament on Saturday,
January 28.
