Greece hope to host Formula 1 Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Greece has shown hope to host the Formula 1 Grand Prix and are planning a proposal to organize the race even at the Port of Piraeus near Athens.
The Greek Government has recently expressed their inclination towards hosting a race in their country and the idea has been initiated by the municipality of Drapetsona which is keen to restore an abandoned industrial area to build a circuit of 3.23 miles.
Moreover, it will be very easy to reach there as it is just ten miles away from the capital Athens.
Greece sports minister, Konstantinos Cavaras has said that the scheme has full support from the government but at present they are not aware of when they will get the necessary funds as they are facing huge economic issues.
Furthermore, Cavaras said that the development of a race track at Drapetsona will open a new door for Piraeus to grow.
“We have to support all projects that market Greece,” Cavaras is quoted by Autoweek. “The possibility of having Drapetsona host a Formula One race would be very important for the development of Piraeus.”
In addition, the Fellow minister Costas Tzavaras has also said that the race will create more interest in the sport and will surely attract more audience.
Additionally, he insisted that they are earnestly looking forward for opportunities which will help in promoting their country on an international scale and the government is ready to provide every kind of support in this regard.
“The main priority of this government is to create instruments of development,” he said. “In this critical time for our country, every effort that promotes Greece and attracts international interest is welcome and deserves our support.”
Besides, he said that organising a grand prix event will surely develop their tourism industry. He also said that it will open new prospects to cope with the ongoing crisis and will create employment opportunities which will eventually lead towards economic
prosperity.
“The prospect of holding Formula One races in Drapetsona raises expectations for upgrading our tourism product through the promotion of historic port of Piraeus and the reformation of the broader region, he added.”
