Greece overwhelm Germany in preliminary round, Group B: Day five – European Water Polo Championships
Greece’s national team has overwhelmed Germany in their second Women’s water polo preliminary match of Group ‘B’ on fifth day of the ongoing 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Friday, January 20 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband
Swim Stadium.
The European championships are a warm-up tournament for the upcoming mega stage of sports, the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Greek squad has proved their commitment to the sport, by defeating Germany with a difference of six goals. The German squad experienced ruthless aggression of the opposing team and lost their second game of the tournament with a 12-6 lead.
Greece’s team substantiated their position for victory in the first quarter of the game, where they gained a lead of one goal over Germany. The German team accomplished two goals in the first quarter while the Greek squad raked three goals and the score
remained 3-2 after the first round.
They geared up their efforts in the second round, where the succeeded in obstructing almost all efforts of their competitors and notched up three goals. Consequently, Germany managed to achieve a single goal and the score went up to 6-3 after the halftime.
The same continued in third quarter, where Greece once again succeeded in adding three goals to their points table and Germany managed to score a lone goal. Greece extended its lead to five goals as the score remained 9-4 after the third round.
In the fourth quarter, both teams elevated their efforts and Greece achieved three goals while Germany found the cage twice and lost the match by six goals.
Angeliki Gerolymou of Greece accomplished five goals for her team and was declared best player of the game. Furthermore, Greece will play its next match against Spain on Sunday, January 22. Spain is the second beast team of Group ‘B’ and has not lost a single
match, therefore the spectators are eager to see which team wins the third match.
The crowd was excited to see gruelling efforts of all teams, as their performance at the European Championships will depict their position at the upcoming 2012 Olympic Games.
