Greece overwhelm Turkey in preliminary round, Group A: Day four – European Water Polo Championships
Greece’s national team demonstrated their astonishing efforts by overwhelming Turkey in their third Men’s water polo qualifying match of Group ‘A’ on fourth day of the 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Thursday, January
19 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
The match was a true example of what is called a one-sided game, as Greek players made no mistake and smothered almost all efforts of their opposing team in the four-quarter game. Turkey suffered their third defeat of the tournament at the hands of Greek
squad, which earned a lead of 20-2 goals in the 32-minute match.
The first quarter of the game was comparatively slow, where Greece showed no signs of aggression and advanced on the points table by just one goal. Georgios Afroudakis of Greece scored first goal for his team in the last four minutes of first round, taking
a lead of 1-0 over Turkey.
The second round was unbelievable, where Greek players geared up their efforts and overpowered Turkish squad by scoring six consecutive goals. In contrast, Turkey once again failed to show any advancement on their points table and the score remained 7-0
after the halftime.
The third quarter saw Turkish players scoring two goals, but they failed to bring any harm to their challenging team. Their effort was trailed by four goals from Greece’s side and the third round expired with a score of 11-2.
Unlike the previous quarters, Greek players showed no mercy to their opponent team and stunned the arena by scoring nine goals in last eight minutes of the game. Once again, Turkey failed to supplement their score and remained at nil, allowing Greece to
enjoy a lead of 18 goals in their third water polo match.
Andreas Miralis of Greece was declared player of the game, as he accomplished four goals while his team-mates, Emmanouil Mylonakis, Argyris Theodoropoulos, Afroudakis and Ioannis Fountoulis all scored three goals each.
The session ended after the completion of all listed matches whereas Greece is now headed to compete with the second best team of Group ‘A’, Hungary, in its fourth water polo game on Saturday, January 21.
