Greece v Cyprus at Corfu – European Championship Division Two Twenty20 (Group B) – Match Update
An all-round performance from Aslam Mohammad propelled Greece to a 7-wicket win over Cyprus in their Group B match at Maessonghi on September 6, during the European Championship Division Two Twenty20 currently being played in Corfu.
Greece won the toss and chose to field first, with skipper Michalis Kyriacou (32) and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Syed-Hussain-c92282 (17) opening the innings for Cyprus. However, the opening stand was cut off at 44 runs, with Aslam Mohammad (4-0-21-2) sending both batsmen back to the pavilion.
Muhammad http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mohsin-c77587 top-scored for the team with 55, in addition to setting up a 35-run stand with Gurbhej Singh (7), followed by a 31-run partnership with Nimal Durayalage (10) after Singh had been caught out by Aslam Mohammad off Dimitrios Triantafillidis.
By the time Mohsin was sent back to the pavilion by Mehmood Ahmed (4-0-29-3), Cyprus had reached 132 for 4.
Malik Tariq (1) and wicketkeeper batsman Dhanuka Agathocleous (0) were both unremarkable, and by the end of 20 overs, with 7 wickets down and Dineja Agathocleous (5*) and Stelios Michaelides (0*) at the crease, Cyprus finished at 138.
Greece opened their innings with Aslam Mohammad (60 off 24, including 6 sixes and 4 fours) and Anastasios Manousis (21), and the two batsmen set up a steady partnership of 89 runs. However, Gurbhej Singh (4-1-26-2) stepped in to break it up, sending Aslam
Mohammad back to the pavilion.
He was followed to the crease by Andreas Koutsoufis who departed soon after (following a mere 1-run contribution), as did Manousis, caught and bowled by Gurbhej Singh. However, skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Nic-Pothas-c2100 (30*) and Mehmood Ahmed (15*) teamed up for an unbeaten 46-run
stand, which got the team safely over the finish line, enabling them to reach 139, with 7 wickets and 26 deliveries remaining.
However, despite the victory, Greece were unable to make it to the next stage of the tournament, and the same went for Cyprus. Greece will now be battling it out with Estonia in the 5th Place Play-Off Semi-Final on September 7 at the Ropa Valley
No 2 Ground, while Cyprus will be facing Luxembourg at Maessonghi on the same date for the 9th Place Play-Off Semi-Final.
