I really hate the fact that every year tourists abuse their stay in Greece and give Greece a bad name.

What do you think the answer is? Is this the only way to have fun?

  1. no i don't thinks is the only way.But because we need the tourist to bring money in the island thar's not mouch we can do.

  2. YES the answer is quiet simple..you ban alcholo.on isalnds like mykonos,so if we get say 5 islands that have trouble in that manner we just simply band alcohol..any body found consuming or in posseion of alcholo..is simply not allowed access on those islands..also there is another method for those who say you need a drink to party..well ok..the thing there to do is to limit the amount to each person....we cant change peoples attitude or thoughts but we can stop thier supply or part off....and if we lose tourisim  from those isalnds we just simply turn it to our favour..such as pagenants..or world class music festivals we dont need another manila in greece...any way ..tourisim is a major source of the GNP to greece but not the the sole source as it once was..we are progressing in other comercial areas.. it is up to each of us greeks to hold a national census on what comerical ventures greece should take for the next 50 years..tourisim has become a a lewd s*x show..on most islands..that is not what greeks are about. we should endevour to practice what we preach too. as the famous saying says ..monkey see monkey do....

  3. Is it tourists or Greeks that give it a bad name?

  4. Tourists abuse their stay in almost every region they visit. The problem is what is the tourist product we offer to them? If you take for example Kavos  in Corfu, Faliraki Rhodes, Ayia Napa - Cyprus, Mallia - Crete! Yes these areas are wild but this does not mean the entire island of Crete,Corfu, Rhodes are like that. The locals together with tour operators create this image of the particular regions, in order to attract the particular group of tourists who wish to b drunk every morning- night.

At least in these areas, crazy tourists are isolated.

But the media coverage...( print media - electronic etc) focuses on the extreme facts and though a negative "advertisement" of the regions , still is an advertisement because there is a particular tourist market who likes this kind of vacations.

What can we do about that...we can still be representatives of our country, our hospitality, our respect in the environment! We can choose to ignore these extreme facts. We can still inform our foreign friends about the must - see and in Greece! (Trust me, serious and conscious tourists know about Greece and its people, the point is to attract more of these tourists- I am happy to say that this year in Thessaloniki the city centre is full of high-quality tourists, who stop in Thessaloniki on their way to Chalkidiki, people who want to buy 100 EUR Greek biological wine, 1000 EUR Castoria Fur etc so this means that things are changing)

But if the tourist product does not change then...these incidents won't stop happening. There is a need for such "vacations" and where there is a need there is a "product"

  5. yes, tell me about it. it is really annoying. i mean we are a tolerant country but some of these tourists come and get drunk, showing off their private parts in front of other people, they have s*x orgies, what has the world come to?! It is very bad to see that they take advantage of our hospitality this way but they should really get the police there to do their job properly. Incidents like that should not be tolerated; I do not care who you are, you just have to respect the country you are visiting. When i was studying in England, I did not even dare throw a sweet wrapper on the street; they should really get their act together and think how bad their acts reflect not only on them as individuals but as a nation. Luckily, I know that Britain is not just about drunk girls with skimpy skirts showing off and tongue-kissing in public and guys pulling down their trousers to showing their buttock cheek (that is what we mostly see in the islands, don't we? I am not making anything up); I know and love Britain and just wish some British young people would be a bit more respectful. I do not mean to be racist but it is mostly British people who cause such a stir every summer in Greek islands.

Did you see what happened with the water bottles in the Parthenon? They sell the bottles of water double the price the should, and it is not Greeks that do that but immigrants who try to earn their living. I mean fair enough earn your living but when these tourists go back to their countries they will say "look at the state of them, they ripped us off, and right in front of a monument site as well", what a disgrace, right in front of such a grand monument such as the Parthenon for such things to be happening! Good thing the police is patrolling the place where the illegal selling of water takes place. So, I would add that not only should tourists not abuse Greece but also the immigrants and last but not least, Greeks also! Let's all admit it, when we see our fellow Greek is spitting on the ground or throwing his trash on the pavement, we should do something about it as well! We should work from within (try to better ourselves first) out.

  6. there is no right answer unless you want to ban alcohol but still, people will find a way to "go crazy".  each country has its own set of problems dealing w/tourists.  Some countries in southeast Asia are aware of the fact that many male tourists that do come for vacation are often looking for s*x w/children (sad but very true).

i can ignore a drunk foreigner but a pedophile??  **** no!!!

  7. I agree with the answerer above me ... to an extent concerning the Brits - but the 2nd part of Greeks not taking advantage is absurd! My second comment directly links to my first.

British drunken louts are the lowest of low and should be banned - but who's going to ban them? It's not British concern when Greece allows them to get away with this behaviour. Try and get away with it in Britain! Greece gains too much money from these people - and they allow their islands to become a haven to such low and disgusting people. A Greek hotel owner knows what they're doing when they hand over their hotel to Club 18-30 ..... so if Greece puts her foot down and stops this type of tourist then all will be ok - but as it is (and has been since I was 18 - MANY years ago) they are making money and that seems to be their first priority. It's not a matter of abusing Greek hospitality - the hospitality they have paid for through typical firms like 18-30 in Greece is exactly what they are expecting - and Greeks are giving what they pay for....... the places you mention sell themselves as the all-goes - party-places ..... if the shoe fits wear it ---- if not change (and lose the millions spent on alcohol.)

Personally I would go with the latter - but then again my livelihood does not depend on alcohol sales.
