Question:

Greek churches?

We will be visiting Athens in September and want to visit some of the churches, I am not talking about attending a service, but as a tourist.

I know that some religions require a woman's head and arms to be covered. What is the dress code for women to enter the churches in Greece? Will we be allowed to enter with jeans and takkies?

  1. Going to local churches - you can wear what you want - it's the monastaries than have dress codes for women (if the woman is allowed in)

Some of these answers make me laugh - obviously not been to a Greek church (wedding etc) in a long time - it seems to be the norm to wear as less as possible! That includes the bride!

Personally I would always dress nicely and respectfully in a church ... but that's me ..... obviously the young Greek girls nowadays have no such worries!

  2. haha no you dont have to wear a veil or cover your head! lol.

Dont worry, as a tourist wearing jeans and takkies would be ok, there are many tourists in Athens that visit the churches wearing that, and noone says anything as long as they are not revealing. Women in Greece however are a little different though lol : )

  3. Jeans will be OK. Sorry, I don't know what takkies are... Shoes?

You won't need to cover your head, and you'll probably be OK in anything you wear as long as it's not a mini skirt, shorts, a short dress or, you know, anything too revealing...

About the arms, if you wear a short sleeved blouse you'll be OK.

  4. It is well advised to take a covering if any member of your party is going to be wearing a vest top or short shorts that day. Jeans and trainers are fine, knee length and mid length shorts and skirts are fine, but wearing a tiny miniskirt or hotpants would be disrespectful.

  5. ~The Principle of Greek Churches are that you are going to visit your "Fathers" house, as we are all Gods Children.

You just dress tidy and even if some Greeks don't stick to it you should wear a Long Sleeve (shirt, top) and Trousers(Jeans etc).

As long as you are Clean and tidy you must not worry.

    Good Luck!

  6. No, you can enter to our churces freely and with any costume you want..

But if you want to visit a monastery (not at all monasteries) woman want to have a special apparel, which is given free of charge at those monasteries

  7. look in Greece there are 2 kinds of Churches those that there are in cities and those that there are in monasteries. woman in churches can entry with jeans but at the monasteries they must wear skirt.
