Greek greetings?

Question

If a Greek person signs a letter "many kisses"-is it friendly or is it meant to suggest a more romantic greeting?

Greeks are very affectionate and oftentimes they finish a letter or a good bye in person with "may kisses" AKA "filakia".

Also,is not unusual to see men and women kissing each other on both cheeks as a way of greeting,pretty much same way as Americans shake hands.

It is more friendly than romantic. Many women use it when they want to greet someone else (usually women) goodbye. Men usually use it to greet women, or their own or another family (not their friends).

As rachel said, Greeks are friendly but more than that we are affectionate with friends and family.  Not just by phone or letter but in person too.

Greeting a friend who you haven't seen in a while with a kiss on each cheek is not unusual.  Saying goodbye to someone who is far away or you're not going to see for a long time will be the same.

no no dude!not at all!We greek,speak friendly to each other and we always say filakia(fee-laa-kea) when we close a letter,when we send a message or when speaking on the phone!don't misunderstand it...!

many times i have been told many kisses by good Greek friends of mine

and many of the same friends we greet each other with kisses on the cheeks and hugs

so it most likely isn't romantic and in any case

you can ask them if they meant it to be romantic in the end

it doesn't hurt to ask

It's friendly - even some of my customers say it when they leave the shop ..... and I definitely don't want any romance from them! lol It's just like English speakers writing xxxxx at the end
